Welcome to Waku Doki Japan
“Waku Doki” is a Japanese phrase that captures the thrill of excitement and anticipation
the kind you feel when embarking on a new adventure.
Who Writes Waku Doki Japan?
Hi, I’m May, a Japanese native who has spent over 15 years living in the U.S. While traveling to Japan is a dream for many, it can feel daunting if you’re worried about cultural differences or mobility challenges. That’s why I created this blog: to make Japan accessible to everyone, regardless of physical abilities or walking capacity.
The Inspiration Behind Waku Doki Japan
For a long time, I thought traveling to Japan meant being prepared to walk—a lot. But one day, I realized that not everyone who dreams of visiting Japan is able to walk long distances. Some people have limited mobility, use wheelchairs, or simply prefer a slower pace. This realization became deeply personal when my father, after suffering a stroke, could no longer walk long distances. It inspired me to plan a trip where he could comfortably enjoy Japan with our family.
Why I Created This Blog
As I began researching options for accessible travel—often called “barrier-free travel” in Japan—I discovered a wealth of resources in Japanese. However, I noticed that English-language versions were often oversimplified or lacked crucial details. This made me determined to share clear, practical, and detailed information in English, so anyone planning a trip to Japan could feel confident and well-prepared.
Our Mission
Waku Doki Japan is here to help you plan a trip to Japan that feels exciting and stress-free. Whether you’re concerned about accessibility, use a wheelchair, or want to avoid excessive walking, I aim to provide the resources and tips you need to feel confident and prepared.
Japan is a beautiful country, and everyone deserves the chance to experience its wonders. Through this blog, I hope to reduce your uncertainties, inspire your plans, and help you discover the joy of traveling at your own pace.
