Before You Buy: Essential Points for Choosing a JR Regional Pass

If you’re planning to explore Kansai by train, a JR Regional Pass is one of the most convenient and cost-effective ways to travel. Before choosing your pass, keep these key points in mind:

  • Shinkansen Access – Check whether the pass allows you to ride the Shinkansen (bullet train) and if there are any restrictions on reserved or non-reserved seats.
  • Validity Period – How many days will the pass be valid? Choose one that matches your travel schedule.
  • Coverage Area – Make sure the pass includes all the destinations you plan to visit to maximize its value.

Keep these dates in mind:

  • After purchasing the JR Regional Pass in the U.S., the Exchange Order must be exchanged within 3 months of issuance.
You need to exchange it for the actual rail pass after entering Japan at designated locations.
  • When you exchange your Exchange Order for the JR Regional Pass, you can choose a start date for the pass. However:
-The start date must be within 30 days of the exchange date.
-Once set, the start date cannot be changed.
