“How much data do I really need for Japan?”

This was one of my biggest questions before traveling.
Most guides give rough estimates, but I wanted to know real numbers from actual use.

So in this article, I’m sharing:

  • My real eSIM data usage over 15 days in Japan
  • What I used data for (and what I didn’t)
  • How this can help you choose the right eSIM plan

My travel style

Before looking at the numbers, here’s how I used my phone during the trip:

  • Navigation with Google Maps
  • Messaging via iMessage
  • Web browsing (restaurants, trains, schedules)
  • Occasional social media
  • No heavy video streaming
  • No hotspot sharing

When Wi-Fi was available (for example, at my accommodation), I used Wi-Fi instead of mobile data. Most eSIM data was used while I was out exploring Japan.

My actual eSIM data usage (15 days)

Actual data usage over 15 days in Japan (light to moderate use)

My usage highlights:

  • Trip length: 15 days
  • Total data used: around 4.6 GB
  • eSIM plan purchased: 10 GB

Main usage:

  • Google Maps
  • iMessage
  • Web browsing
  • Occasional social media

For my travel style, 10 GB was more than enough for a 2-week trip.

A helpful comparison (Pokémon GO user)

For reference, my husband used the same eSIM type during the trip.

  • His usage: about 5.8 GB in 15 days
  • Main difference: regular use of Pokémon GO

Location-based games and apps tend to use more data, even without video streaming.

What this means for you

Here’s a simple way to think about it:

  • Light to moderate use
    (maps, messaging, browsing)
10 GB is usually enough for 2 weeks
  • Heavier use
(location-based games, frequent social media, video)
→ Consider a larger data plan

Everyone’s usage is different, but real numbers make planning much easier.
